NICK GORDY INTERVIEW

Motokuchi Zawawa: so your names nick huh?

Nick Gordy: yes nick gordy

Motokuchi Zawawa: what kinda shit is that?

Nick Gordy: jewish i think well, no i didnt get my mom's last name, had i gotten my moms last name then id have a jewish name

Motokuchi Zawawa: so youre a poser?

Nick Gordy: haha nah, im jewish, i just dont have all the stereotypical traits that go along with it except for the big nose part

Motokuchi Zawawa: how old are you?

Nick Gordy: I'm 23

Motokuchi Zawawa: is that cool?

Nick Gordy: only because it was Jordan's number

Motokuchi Zawawa: and the two numbers are in numerical order. you have to be stoked on that right?

Nick Gordy: i've never actually thought about that haha im stoked on it now that you mention it

Motokuchi Zawawa: youve got a bunch of tattoos right?

Nick Gordy: I've got a good bit, not as many as I'd like to have but its a process

Motokuchi Zawawa: how many tribal ones do you have?

Nick Gordy: haha none thats a no no

Motokuchi Zawawa: do you fancy yourself a skateboarder?

Nick Gordy: I fancy myself a skateboarder, yes

Motokuchi Zawawa: hows that going for you?

Nick Gordy: it's going great, it always has and always will be the most fun thing in the world for me. and all my joints and limbs still work so I'm definetly stoked about that too

Motokuchi Zawawa: you recently took a pretty hard slam right?

Nick Gordy: yeah, that was probably my worst one so far

Motokuchi Zawawa: what were you thinking as you flew through the air?

Nick Gordy: honestly man, it was almost instant. like i saw the patch of dirt i was maching towards and as soon as I hit it, i was on the ground. I didn't even realize that I had traveled any distance.  I was more so thinking before it actually happened, like "man, this is about to fucking hurt"

Motokuchi Zawawa: and you collapsed your lung?

Nick Gordy: yes haha deflated like a popped tire

Motokuchi Zawawa: probably shouldnt have smoked cigarettes on the way to the hospital huh?

Nick Gordy: haha that definetly didn't help I'm sure

Motokuchi Zawawa: but youre back on the board full force?

Nick Gordy: I feel like I'm back 100%, i've been a little weary, somewhat cautious cause I started back a couple of weeks earlier than the doctors said but I feel good so i'm just gonna keep doing what i've always been doing.

Motokuchi Zawawa: when are you gonna go out filming again?

Nick Gordy: whenever chase gets back from tampa lol nah really just whenever I get the chance, because of work I really only get to ride wednesdays, thursdays, and saturdays, but wednesday is my only day out of the week where i have absolutly nothing to do so I like to take full advantage of that day. at the same time, i definitly dont stress about filming cause nothing depends on me getting footage, I love skating so im going to skate with or without a camera, at the same time filming is always fun. its a good feeling, kind of like work accomplished.

Motokuchi Zawawa: everyone wants another part.

Nick Gordy: from me?

Motokuchi Zawawa: yeah!

Nick Gordy: I'd love to put together some good footage for another part, i had so much fun filming for Chase's "Time Wasted" video, primarily because half of the time I forgot I was filming for a video, there was no pressure. but shit, I'd love to film another part, I had a blast. and Chase just kills it anyways, skating, filming, video editing. all around talented dude.

Motokuchi Zawawa: any last words?

Nick Gordy: "It's getting hard to be someone but it all works out, it doesn't matter much to me" John Lennon says that in "Strawberry Fields", and i've always liked that line because it's reassuring to me

Motokuchi Zawawa: shout outs?

Nick Gordy: shout out to you Cameron right off the bat, I know i havn't known you for too long but you're a good dude, thank you for doing this interview with me. and shout out to Chase Trau, Jona Owings, Daniel Farmer, Candler Woods, my parents of course aka my first sponsor, and all of my other friends that make my life as great as it is.

Thursday

NIK SPAULDING INTERVIEW

 Motokuchi Zawawa: whats your name?

Nikolas Spaulding: Nikolashanti Spaulding Spauldingo

Motokuchi Zawawa: what do you do for a living?

Nikolas Spaulding: Vegetarian Chef/ Skateshop owner

Motokuchi Zawawa: whats the name of your skateshop?

Nikolas Spaulding: Ujamaa Boardhouse in Dirty Durham N.C.

Motokuchi Zawawa: why isnt it open right now?

Nikolas Spaulding: our previous shop got flooded and they condemned the building. Been waiting on the renovations to get finished at our up and coming spot located in the Motorco building about 2 blocks from the Durham skatepark. Shooting for late Feb early March to reopen.

Motokuchi Zawawa: what does ujamaa mean?

Nikolas Spaulding: Swahili for Cooperative Economics. Basically support your own and support what you're about. In our case support skater owned shops and companies

Motokuchi Zawawa: how long has ujamaa been around?

Nikolas Spaulding: 4 1/2 years
its been a beautiful struggle

Motokuchi Zawawa: what made you want a shop?

Nikolas Spaulding: I always wanted one, but moving to Durham and getting behind the building of the Durham skatepark made it come to lite, being that there were no skateshops in Durham. Came into a little cash (far less than what I needed to do the shop right) just gave it a shot. Its been awesome meeting new people and working with the community through the shop

Motokuchi Zawawa: whats up with the dreads?

Nikolas Spaulding: Its just me. Free and all naturale. Ancient hairstyle. No vanity here sorry.

Motokuchi Zawawa: lil waynes got dreads.

Nikolas Spaulding: hahhaha true! thats what it means to me. cant vouch for lil weezy. I'm getting up there in age and I've seen it come and go in the fads. Its funny when kids come up to me and say I want DREADS and I say "why?" "I dont know I think there cool!" Whatever floats your boat. Little bit more spiritual significance for me.

Motokuchi Zawawa: why did you start skating?

Nikolas Spaulding: Freedom
problem eraser at least while I'm skating

Motokuchi Zawawa: who inspired you?

Nikolas Spaulding: its pretty cliche. The Gonz. A slew of other cats too Ray Barbee, Natas, Tommy G, all the old Dogtown venice skaters like Scott Oster, Eric Dressen and them boyz. But for the most park it was Mark Gonzales.

Motokuchi Zawawa: how long have you been skating?

Nikolas Spaulding: 27 years
Damn I'm old

Motokuchi Zawawa: hows your kickflip?

Nikolas Spaulding: bangin!! first trick i do everyday!!!
Im not a freestyler. Im a bonified slasher!!

Motokuchi Zawawa: what kind of product would someone see in ujamaa?

Nikolas Spaulding: when times are good we try to carry hard core companies that arent in every other page in a skate 'zine. Although you have to carry the mainstream companies, we try to keep it pretty diverse. Decks are pretty trendy so we try to keep our ear to the streets on what the stick of the week is. Footwear, hardware, softgoods and accesories. We try and support local brands as much we can

Motokuchi Zawawa: any last words?

Nikolas Spaulding: Always give thanks to the Most High! My wife, Mom, Dad, my inlaws, Killa Cam, the whole Durham crew massive!!! If you're in the area come check us out! Peace...
